Our farmhouse is in the village of Massarella, part of the municipality of Fucecchio, in the area of outstanding natural beauty known as the Cerbaie above the Fucecchio Marshes, Italy's largest inland marsh area.
Massarella, formerly Massapiscatoria, owes its name to the Massa or outcrop of rocks and Piscatoria referring to fishing, which has been a feature of the River Usciana and the Marshes since the early Middle Ages. It was a rural community and stronghold of the Cadolingi family in the 13th Century and the site of its 17th Century church is mentioned as early 998 in a charter from Emperor Otto III.
The interior of the church has frescoes by Romano Stefanelli.
The folkloric palio or horse race in May, in which Massarella holds as many as four flags (victories), "the Barchini" (traditional marsh boats) race in June, the festival of "Sagra della Zuppa" (a traditional local dish) in July and the Coronation of Mary procession in September with its spectacular firework display.
