History

Podere Il Poggetto, the name means the hilltop farmhouse, so called because its 35 acres occupy an elevated position in the Fucecchio marshes. Its origins stretch back into history. A decorated altar found during restoration work and the numerous frescoes on religious themes found on the walls bear witness to its existence as early as the 6th Century, as the home of a number of religious orders, perhaps as an inn or resting place for travellers. Burned to the ground following an outbreak of the plague, an illness common in the area owing to the marshland below, it was subsequently rebuilt from the few remaining ruins. In 1873, it was acquired by a large local estate for its red wine and highly valued olive oil production. It was bought by the current owners in 1970 and still today produces red and white PGI1 Tuscan wine and PDO2 olive oil from the Florence hills. It became part of the Italian Farmhouse Accommodation network in 1994 and is on the list of regional educational establishments, catering for children aged 6 to 14.
